Week of Kitchen Renovations: Backsplash

For the second day of kitchen updates, I’ll be featuring our backsplash. This is another project that Hubby and I did on our own. Because of some random obstacles with our kitchen, we needed a unique backsplash. I would love to have a glass mosaic tile backsplash, but maybe in our next kitchen.

As I mentioned, we had some obstacles… We didn’t want to gut the kitchen to the studs, so the walls stayed in tact (as much as possible) throughout the renovation. Because of this, we knew we’d have subway tiling behind the backsplash. The old kitchen had a piece of laminate attached to the subway tiling with liquid nails. We didn’t want to try to remove the liquid nail residue from the subway tiling, so we needed to find something else that could be attached to the tiling easily.

I came across a display for these faux tin tiles at Home Depot one day and we decided it would be a good solution to our problem. We agreed on a color and bought some of the tiles. They all had to be cut to size, so we first made templates out of posterboard. The templates were cut to size and then used to cut the actual backsplash pieces.

We purchased the double sided tape that is sold with the tiles to used to attach them. Lastly, Hubby went around with some silicone sealant to seal the seam between the granite and the backsplash.

Installation was very easy (once everything was cut) and we love the look. We also purchased the outlet covers, but I haven’t gotten around to covering them yet…

What, what an amazing transformation. Everything looks fantastic. I’ve been looking at those metal-type backsplashes for when we re-do ours and I was a bit hesitant because while I like them I was afraid it would be too much. I like how you did it though so I’ll definitely have to keep some of this in my inspiration folder!

I have loved these posts. Your kitchen looks amazing! Love all of the little touches (the spice rack, the cupboard doors that cover the radiator, etc.). Fantastic job!
